6 Ways To Use Diatomaceous Earth In Your House

What Is Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring, soft, sedimentary rock that is crumbled into a fine powder. It contains the fossilized remains of prehistoric organisms called protists. Our food grade diatomaceous earth is used both internally and externally, but in this article, we are focusing on how you can use it around the house.

High in silica, absorbent, mildly abrasive, and safe for use around animals and children, diatomaceous earth is a household powerhouse and an excellent choice for so many tasks. Here are 6 creative ways to use it.

  1. Natural Pest Control

Our diatomaceous earth is safe for people to consume, however, when it touches hard bodied bugs, it creates tiny cuts in their outer shells and causes the pests to dehydrate and die within a few days. Diatomaceous earth can be used to kill cockroaches, bed bugs, stink bugs, ants, fleas, silverfish, and spider mites. To use diatomaceous earth as a natural pest control, apply a fine layer around spaces that the pests will pass through. When they walk across the diatomaceous earth, it will come into contact with their skin and shells, and your pests will be eliminated.

  2. Compost Pile Deodorizer

As the summer months approach and your compost pile becomes more fragrant, diatomaceous earth can help. Mix diatomaceous earth into your compost as needed to reduce smells without compromising the health of your compost pile. Worms living in your compost pile will be totally unharmed by the diatomaceous earth, as they are soft bodied creatures.

  3. Soil improvement

Diatomaceous earth is light and porous. Popular for bonsai gardening and hydroponics, it won’t obstruct natural drainage and makes for a great a soil conditioner. Consider adding diatomaceous earth to your ingredients list next time you’re blending a soil mix for your potted plants.

  4. DIY Beauty Products

Diatomaceous earth is gently abrasive, and its exfoliating effects will leave your skin soft and glowing when you use it as an ingredient in your beauty products. Try adding diatomaceous earth as an ingredient in your body scrubs and soaps. You can make a simple body exfoliant by combining 2 teaspoons of diatomaceous earth with a small amount of water and rubbing onto your skin (ensure that you rinse it off afterwards).

  5. Reduce Cat Litter Box Smells

Diatomaceous earth is safe for use around pets and can even be added to cat litter as a natural deodorizer. Simply mix in some diatomaceous earth with regular kitty litter and notice how unwanted odors disappear.

  6. Remove Burnt Food From Pots And Pans

The abrasive qualities of diatomaceous earth can be used to your full advantage when cleaning tough spots on your pots and pans. Try adding a bit of diatomaceous earth when you are scrubbing burnt foods from your pots and pans and watch how easily they are cleaned.
