Za'atar Spice Recipe
Za'atar spice is a delicious blend of herbs, usually including cumin, thyme, sesame seeds, sumac, and parsley. Historically some blends also included hyssop. If sumac isn’t something you have at home, you could substitute lemon pepper or add additional lemon to the dish you are making with your za'atar spice.
There are countless flavor combinations of za'atar that can be made, but we wanted to share an extremely simple version for those of you who haven’t tried it before and want something less complex to get started with.
Feel free to change the ingredients however you see fit. This blend is excellent when mixed with olive oil and spread on flatbread, as a seasoning for meat, or on pretty much anything else you can think of.
To make this spice blend, you will need the following ingredients:
2 tbsp dried thyme
1 tbsp sesame seeds
1 tsp sumac
½ tsp salt
In a small pan over medium heat, dry roast your sesame seeds for just a few minutes, until they are lightly brown. Set aside and allow to cool.
Next, with a mortar and pestle, grind your thyme until it becomes a coarse powder. Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight jar until ready to use. Enjoy!
