What Is Gentian?
Gentian is a medicinal root that is native to the Alps and Himalayas. It has been used in European herbalism since approximately 23 C.E. Gentian works well both on its own and when combined with other herbs.
How to Use Gentian (Common Uses)
Gentian root can be taken internally as a tea, decoction, or extract. Gentian is powerful, and is usually only used in small quantities.
Medicinal Uses and Benefits of Gentian
Gentian is a bitter root that helps to stimulate stomach acid (HCl) production and bile secretion. It is especially beneficial for those with digestive weakness, and is a popular ingredient in recipes for herbal digestive formulas. Aside from helping to tone the digestive tract and promote digestion, gentian can be useful as a tool to increase appetite. It can help to stimulate the liver, and can be beneficial as an aid in reducing some types of nausea and bloating.
Especially in larger doses, gentian root may stimulate bowel movements.
Gentian root is antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. It may be found in formulas for conditions ranging from fever to parasitic infections.
When taken internally, gentian root may be beneficial for increasing the excretion of uric acid. This makes it a popular choice for gout and related conditions.
Two of the active constituents found in gentian root, sweroside and swertiamarin, may have cell protecting effects on the body and be helpful for enhancing collagen production.
Despite its bitter flavor, gentian root is a common herbal ingredient in many recipes, especially ones with alcohol. It plays a key flavor role in Angostura bitters, as well as in a French liquor named Suze. When making bitters with gentian root, it is commonly used in combination with other herbs. Other herbs used include angelica, turmeric, and fenugreek for a warming bitters blend, or dandelion and chicory root for cooling bitters.
