What Is Blue Lotus?
Blue lotus is a flower that grows naturally in eastern parts of Africa, as well as southern Arabia. Our blue lotus is sustainably sourced from Thailand. Blue lotus works well both on its own and when combined with other herbs.
Lotus is often confused with water lily, and although the plants are often sold interchangeably, it is important to know the difference. The pink and white lotus sold by Zhi Herbals are true lotus plants. Our red and blue lotus are in the water lily family, although they are often referred to as lotus and used as such. Most plants referred to as lotus will have a similar effect, with only subtle differences between them.
How to Use Blue Lotus (Common Uses)
Taken internally as a tea, powder, capsules, or extract. Blue lotus is often used for smoking, and is a key ingredient in many of our herbal smoke blend recipes. Visit our herbal blog for blue lotus tea blend ideas, and recipes like lavender and blue lotus infused butter.
Medicinal Uses and Benefits of Blue Lotus
Blue lotus has long been prized for its gentle consciousness altering effects. It can be used to enhance euphoria and feelings of wellbeing, and can be used to enhance dreaming and visions. Blue lotus is good for relaxation and as an aphrodisiac, and it isn’t as sleep-inducing as some of the other common relaxing herbs, such as valerian root or passion flower. It may also help to relieve pain and increase memory and libido.
The compounds apomorphine and nuciferine are primarily responsible for the effects of blue lotus. Apomorphine is considered to be one of the main psychoactive components of blue lotus. It can activate dopamine receptors, whereas nuciferine is thought to act in ways more similar to dopamine receptor blockade. Contrary to its name, apomorphine does not contain morphine and does not act on opiod receptors in the brain. In parkinson’s disease and similar conditions, apomorphine is sometimes prescribed as a medication.
Traditionally blue lotus was smoked or infused into wine, although there are many ways that it can be taken. In the present day, lotus is often used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
